LOVE IN A CHEMICAL RUSH

We met in a bar near Columbus Circle
And spent a weekend together.

It was dopamine at first glance.
Followed quickly by serotonin and adrenaline.

From Friday to Monday, our synapses awash,
We held onto each other and secreted the rest.

From cortisol, estrogen and testosterone,
All the way to the peaks of vasopressin.

When we reached oxytocin we knew it was over
and went our separate ways.

An excerpt from my book of free verse, “A Mixed Bag.”
